The Boudhanath Stupa is one of the largest and most important Buddhist stupas in the whole world. Located in Kathmandu valley, it is a central place of pilgrimage and meditation for Tibetan Buddhists.

What is Boudhanath Stupa?

Boudhanath Stupa serves as a central hub for Tibetan culture in Nepal. In its exterior, it features a large mandala and it is adorned with the iconic eyes of the Buddah, which symbolize wisdom and compassion. 

In Buddhism, a stupa is a structure that contains relics and is used as a place of meditation. Tibetans believe the remains and relics of Kassapa Buddha lay here. Moreover, these relics are central to the Stupa’s spiritual significance.

Historians believe this place  dates back to the 5th century CE, so it would be over 1,500 years old.  As a result, it is considered a reflection of the development of Buddhism in the region and very important in the cultural landscape of Nepal. Various renovations and restorations have transformed it over time, making it also a must-see for architecture lovers.

What will you see there?

Numerous small stupas, monasteries, and shops surround Boudhanath Stupa. Many people think there are precious statues, jewels, stones and sacred mantras inside it as well as the relics of Kassapa Buddha. 

The devotees believe that the Stupa represents the Buddha Body, and all of his good qualities are contained there. It shows the perfect proportion of a Buddha’s body that is seated on a meditation posture in a throne and also crowned.   

On each side, there are two eyes of Budha which represent wisdom and compassion. For devotees, this place is a representation of Buddha’s enlightened mind and presence. Also, some say it is a reminder for everyone to discover their own throne and spirituality. 

Can I meditate there? The kora practice

Something that makes this place famous is that here you can participate in a traditional practice known as kora. What they do is walk around the Stupa while meditating, making prostrations and offering butter lamps, prayer flags and other offerings. 

Buddhists believe that prayers offered here are especially granted, as the Stupa brings joy to all beings. Therefore, Boudhanath Stupa stands as a powerful and auspicious pilgrimage site and even a center of Buddhist devotion. 

Where is Boudhanath Stupa located?

Boudhanath Stupa is about 11km (around 7 miles) from the center and northeastern outskirts of Kathmandu. To get there you can use a taxi or public transportation. There are buses that depart from the city center that will take you there. 

Visiting the stupa will definitely be a transformative experience filled with spirituality. You shouldn’t miss this place on your trip to Nepal
